Empowering S.E. European Communities in Next Generation Regional Computing and Storage Grids

The research and academic communities of South East Europe have made a big step towards joining the new era of long-term sustainable eInfrastructures in Europe, thanks to the SEE-GRID-SCI eInfrastructure for regional eScience (SEE-GRID-SCI) project, which successfully reached its end in May 2010. SEE-GRID-SCI kicked-off in May 2008 and in its two-year duration it had a catalytic effect on stimulating and empowering the regional communities in the use of the next generation regional computing & storage grid infrastructure. New scientific collaborations among user groups are now feasible with the provision of advanced capabilities to more researchers, with an emphasis on strategic groups in seismology, meteorology and environmental protection.

EU-IndiaGrid2 in the spotlight

EU-IndiaGrid2 is featured in this week's edition of Internataional Science Grid this Week as Bob Jones, EGEE Director, reports on India's Grid computing landscape. Bob Jones participated at the EU-IndiaGrid2 launch event and Kick-off meeting back in January and is a firm believer in the importance of attaining a sustainable grid infrastructure between India and Europe. World Environment Day - EU Statement

On the eve of the World Environment Day, 5 June 2010, Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for Environment highlights the importance of the environment. "World Environment Day is an important day in the calendar. Our world needs it. By continuing to make the choices we make, by consuming and producing in the way that we have been doing for too long, we run the risk of changing the world irreversibly. We run the risk that future generations will not enjoy the planet in the same way that we have been lucky enough to do."

Julian Huppert - EU-IndiaGrid2 & MP for Cambridge

Dr Julian Huppert who represents Cambridge University in the EU-IndiaGrid2 project has been voted Member of Parliament for Cambridge during the recent elections in the UK. A research scientist at the Cavendish Laboratory and a Fellow of Clare College at Cambridge University, Julian successfully held the seat for the Liberal Democrat party with a majority of nearly 6,800. Speaking after the result Julian said "It’s a very great honour to be given the chance to represent Cambridge at Westminster. I’ve fought a campaign to represent everyone in the city, and that’s what I will do."

With the Liberal Democrat party now forming a coalition government with the Conservative party, it is ppssible that he will also be involved with national issues facing the new government.

“I am happy to learn about the second phase of the EU-IndiaGrid project. The first phase has been immensely beneficial for a variety of scientific disciplines including Biology, Earth Science and the Indian collaboration for the Large Hadron Collider. The successful working of the initial phase of the multi-gigabit National Knowledge Network (NKN), Indian Certification Authority, and participation in Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN3) phase 3 are some of the important building blocks for supporting virtual research communities in India.” - Dr R. Chidambaram, Principal scientific advisor to the Government of India.

Hydro-Meteorology Applications Survey – Bridging the gap between the Hydro-Metereology and ICT Communities

Run by the EU Funded project DRIHMS (Distributed Research Infrastructure for Hydro-Meteorology Study), the survey aims to define important topics in Hydro-Meteorology Research (HMR) that can benefit from advances in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), and thus set a joint HMR-ICT research and applications agenda. The survey results will be part of a White Paper of recommendations to build a bridge between the Hydro-Metereology and ICT communities.

Stefano Cozzini's presentation takes place during a session focussing on Computational Chemistry. Chemical applications on EGEE Grid cover a wide area ranging from quantum dynamics computations for small molecular systems through ab initio simulations up to molecular dynamics studies of huge molecular systems of biological and industrial importance. EU-IndiaGrid Kick-off meeting

The EU-IndiaGrid2 Kick-off meeting took place at IIT New Delhi 14-15 January. Attended by members of the EC e-Infrastructures delegation to India, the event set the agenda for the next two years of work for the 15-partner strong consortium who aim to enhance and increase the cooperation between European and Indian e-Infrastructures for the benefit of E-Indian collaboration in eScience and in particular in the fields of Biology, Climate Change Science, High Energy Physics and Material Science.

BACKGROUND

One of the important recommendations of the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) is to inter-connect all knowledge institutions trough high speed data communication network. This would encourage sharing of knowledge, specialized resources and collaborative research.

The Government’s decision to set up such a National Knowledge Network was announced in 2008-09. An initial amount of Rs.100 crore was allocated to the Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and IT for the establishing the NKC. A High Level Committee (HLC) was also set up to coordinate and monitor the establishment of the NKN.

EU-IndiaGrid Kick-off meeting - IIT New Delhi, 14 & 15 January, 2010

Consortium members of EU-IndiaGrid will gather together to discuss the coming two years work. The two-day event will see a number of key members of the EU e-Infrastructures delegation feedback on their workshop held in Delhi 11 & 12 January.

On day one presentations will report on a number of issues highlighting EU-India e-Infrastructure collaboration, and European and Indian networks. The second day will focus on the work of the EU-IndiaGrid consortium with presentations and meetings on the various aspects of the project.
