An impressive series of relevant events marked year 2010 for e-Infrastructures across Europe and India. The year started with EU-India Workshop on Research Infrastructures and, in conjunction, with the Launch of the EU-IndiaGrid2 project in Delhi on January 2010. The Workshop was co-sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology - Government of India and the European Commission as one of the agreed bilateral actions under the overall ambit of India – European Union Science and Technology Cooperation agreement. Both events were opened by Dr Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Adviser to Indian Government and saw the participation of a delegation of European and Indian experts.

The approval of the National Knowledge Network, on March 2010, by the Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure Government of India, with a funding of about 1 Billion euro for a period of over 10 years (http://pib.nic.in/release/release.asp?relid=59878) sets a fundamental landmark in the process towards sustainable e-Infrastructures in India. The approval of the CHAIN project, Co-ordination and Harmonisation of Advanced e-Infrastructures, scheduled to start at the end of 2010, with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser representing India in the project. CHAIN expresses, on the Indian side, the Government’s direct interest and commitment to sustaining e-Infrastructures and the related international cooperation; on the European side the interest and the support for international cooperation in this particular domain. The participation of India to the third generation of the Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN3). India is at the heart of TEIN3 with a PoP at ERNET, Mumbai which a vital lynchpin between Europe and Asia, connecting the GÉANT PoP in Madrid and the TEIN3 PoP in Singapore. TEIN3 is now fully interconnected also to NKN infrastructure. The approval of phase three of GARUDA, the Indian National grid Initiative.
GARUDA has transitioned form the Proof of Concept phase to the Foundation Phase in April 2008 and currently is in the third phase namely Grid Technology Services for Operational Garuda. This phase is approved for three years ending in July 2012The participation of an Indian Delegation at the e-IRG Workshop in October 2010 in Brussels. This Indian participation, organised by EU-IndiaGrid2 project in cooperation with e-IRG, the European Commission and the Belgian Presidency hosting the meeting follows the Recommendations of the EU-India thematic Workshop on Research Infrastructures and sets the conditions for closer cooperation on e-Infrastructure activities across Europe and India. Therefore OGF30 in Brussels, coming just two weeks after the participation of the Indian delegation to the e-IRG Workshop and one month after the discussions at the EGI Technical Forum is an ideal opportunity to have a Workshop on“Interoperation and Interoperability across European and Indian e-Infrastructures” which will review the status and will discuss the perspectives and future actions in this strategic area.
The Workshop will cover aspects spanning from network to operation, middleware and applications aspects addressing the relevant issues for concrete interoperation across European and Indian e-Infarstructures.
